Embryos, Galaxies, and Sentient Beings: How the Universe Makes LifeRichard Grossinger
ISBN: 9781556434198
Publisher: North Atlantic Books Publication Date: 2003 Binding: Softcover The basis for biology is embryogenesis — a method of organizing the matter responsible for the creation of life. This book brings attention to the gap between science’s description of life as random and mechanical, and the depth of human experience. Other sections discuss genetic determinism; embryonic models of healing; the Islamic critique of Western science; and theories of consciousness and language. Offering Buddhist, phenomenological, and indigenous systems of thought as alternatives to neo-Darwinism, the cultural, philosophical, political, and ecological ramifications of embryos, genes, and evolution are explored. |

Out of Babylon: Ghosts of Grossinger'sRichard Grossinger
ISBN: 9781883319571
Publisher: Frog Ltd Publication Date: 1997 Binding: Softcover This dual story about Jewish families and Grossinger's Resort bridges the generations from before World War II to the rise of the counterculture -- A blend of novel, memoir, and oral history reveals the complete insider's tale of the rise and fall of Grossinger's Resort in the Catskills, and of several generations of Jewish families in America This ingenious book fuses literary genres to paint a fascinating double portrait. The first canvas captures the famed resort in the Catskills, sweeping from 19th-century Poland to Manhattan's Lower East Side to Ferndale, New York. It traces the rise and fall of Grossinger's from the 1920s through the '80s. The second tableau takes a closer look at some of the prominent Jewish families who frequented Grossinger's. The author branches out to the family of his stepfather, Robert Towers (born Reuben Turetsky), an early New York City impresario. Towers's son, Jonathan, becomes a focal point as his life declines from high-school quarterback and track star to street person and mental patient. A peculiarly American story, Out of Babylon is the author's voyage of self-discovery, the story of North Atlantic Books and alternative publishing, and of Berkeley in the '70s. Though not a sequel to New Moon, one of the author's earlier works, it provides a broader backdrop to many of the same characters and events. "This is a strong, deeply moving book. I can't think of another example in which the details and particularities of childhood have been evoked so fully, with such painstaking care and precision". -- Paul Auster, author of Moon Palace, Mr. Vertigo, and Smoke |

New MoonRichard Grossinger
ISBN: 9781883319441
Publisher: Frog Ltd Publication Date: 1996 Binding: Hardcover In this nonfiction novel, Richard Grossinger leads the reader into the world of one child in New York of the 1950s and 1960s. Beginning from his earliest memories, he traces a path through grade school at P.S. 6, "group" in Central Park, and high school at Horace Mann, while recalling Freudian psychoanalysis, his father's hotel in the Catskills (Grossinger's), rebellion against Color War at Camp Chipinaw, and the mysterious world of tarot cards. In the second half of New Moon he traverses the stages of adolescence and young manhood: college, summer jobs, dating, marriage, graduate school, and the birth of a first child. Grossinger's tale ends with anthropology fieldwork among Maine fishermen. An epilogue then describes how events of the subsequent two decades led to the writing of this book. New Moon is the most classic sort of tale, a simple narrative of a writer's life, but one so compelling and sincere that readers will find themselves experiencing their own forgotten selves. Grossinger evokes old comics, day camp in Central Park, the Yankees of the 1950s, rock and roll, college fraternities, the Mets' and Jets' 1969 championship seasons, lobsterfishing wharves, and the Hopi Indians of the Third Mesa. Beneath this shifting, cinematic landscape he unveils layers of internal dialogue, dreams, self-witnessing, and personal myth-making, exposing the mechanism of an act we all do (whether publicly or silently) and rarely acknowledge - telling our own story to others and to ourselves. At the same time, he summons the mystery of life itself - the many trances through which consciousness travels in its journey toward self-awareness. |
